Verizon Wireless Internet Access
I get to pilot a PC5750 PC Card from Verizon Wireless which should give me Internet access in virtually every big city. I’m pretty excited about trying it out more this coming week. My department at work is currently evaluating whether or not the Verizon any where Internet access is worth the investment.
The currently plan is to have a few cards available to be checked out when your away on business trips. The idea is that you can still be productive and connected while stuck at airports which typically charge for Internet access. Also, some hotels (usually the nicer ones) like to charge for Internet access as well. I got lucky, being in the IS portion of our audit shop, to test out one of these cards and determine if the cards are worth an investment. Basically, I need to determine how often I would be using the card vs how many times I would need to be paying for Internet access.
To be honest, I don’t still how anyone could come out much cheaper. I mean it would be nice to have Internet access while stuck at airports without having to pay for it but I don’t think we would get that much more work done while at the airport especially considering we can do a good bit of our work with out being connected to a network. Also, most hotels don’t charge for Internet access. So its hard to see how the reoccurring monthly cost would overcome the few times we have to pay to access the Internet while on the road. Nonetheless, I’m going to keep track of it and see.
Either way, I’m interested in seeing how this wireless network from Verizon works out. I gave it a quick test run from the office last week and it seemed to be fairly fast. I just wonder how fast it is with continued use and also how good the connection is in different places. I really don’t have much else to say but I may share my thoughts about the card and Verizon’s service once I’ve had a chance to complete a better test.
