Google Trends made a big splash in the Internet when it was initially released then after a short while it seemed that all talk and reference about it quit with the exception of an occasionally complaint about Google not updating the service or changing Trend results. For some reason, Google Trends popped into my mind the other day and it made me think about the possibilities and ramifications it could have on my blog posting.
To be more specific, I thought Google Trends may be a clever way for me get additional traffic to this site and hopefully gain some much wanted blog subscribers. My logic goes like this: Google Trends offers a list of Hot Search Trends. If I blog about a Hot Search trend that also happens to be related to what I would typically cover on my blog, the chances of someone searching for a topic I’ve written about on my blog increases. In my mind, more blog exposure should lead to more blog subscribers. In theory anyway…
Of course, this theory has its problems. Often what drives people to subscribe to a small website like mine is unique, high-quality content. If the content isn’t unique than people have no reason to subscribe to yet another site which only covers what can be found on the popular websites such as digg.com, wired.com, arstechnica.com, lifehacker.com, engadget.com, slashdot.com, etc.
I have yet to try posting about one of the Hot Trends on Google so I really have no data to evaluate to see if my blog readership would increase or decrease. I’m curious to see if any of you have used Google Trends or some other method to help steer you toward popular topics for which to write blog posts. If you have please share your results in the comment section below. Even if you haven’t, what are your thoughts on using Google Trends for blog posts?
